“LIFE IS NOT A JOURNEY TO THE GRACE WITH THE INTENTION OF ARRIVING SAFELY IN A PRETTY AND WELL PRESERVED BODY, BUT RATHER TO SKID IN BROADSIDE, THOROUGHLY USED UP, TOTALLY WORN OUT, AND LOUDLY PROCLAIMING…WOW…WHATTA RIDE!!!!”

In November, I wrote about the shock I experienced when the tax assessors in my county sent out the preliminary revaluations.

I got a letter in the mail yesterday, which, again, readjusts the tax value of my home. I’m relieved that the Powers That Be have recrunched the numbers and lowered the tax value to a more appropriate sum (about 6% less than the number the tax man sent in November). Overall, it’s a value that more accurately reflects the market. I’m satisfied, at least for now.

A dear friend got me a roll up keyboard for my birthday (Thank you, J). I am practicing typing on it right now–is impervious to liquid spills (silicone coating) and is actually quite a bit easier to type on that I had expected. Although slightly mushy, the portability and cool factor are undeniably geek. I’m totally excited.

I came across this article today and am astounded at the potential level of intrusiveness. Microsoft is developing Big Brother-style software capable of remotely monitoring a worker’s productivity, physical wellbeing and competence. The article goes on to describe how the software can monitor a workers biological and physiological responses, facial expressions and subtle changes to body temperature, blood pressure etc. The software maker says that the software can detect whether a worker is stressed and offer appropriate assistance. However, there is great potential for employer abuse. In general, should employers be able to monitor the physiology of their employees?

I’ve written about some of the unresolved issues relating to Park West, a new development proposed at the corner of NC-54 (Chapel Hill Rd.) and Cary Parkway. There are serious questions as to runoff water and increased traffic congestion in surrounding areas. Yet, the developers of Park West have not offered any major changes to their proposal. More information from NoParkWest and the DavisAndHighHouse.org relating to the proposed Park West Regional Activity Center.

Park West Regional Activity Center Proposal
January 17th Update

Thanks to all who have written to elected officials and the Cary News, spoken out in public hearings, distributed flyers and signed petitions. Our grass roots efforts are making an impact. Our numbers are growing.

Yet as expected, the developers of Park West offered no major changes to their proposal at the final briefing on January 14th. No additional developer funded road improvements have been offered and our NC Department of Transportation has no plans to improve Chapel Hill Rd through at least 2015.

With only 11 days until the crucial vote on the massive Park West proposal, there is work to be done.

Our Call to Action

ATTEND – at the suggestion of Morrisville mayor Jan Faulkner, Park West developers will host yet another meeting to give their proposal a positive spin. Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 23rd from 5-7 at Morrisville Town Hall. Please attend and wear BLUE. As the light in front of him turned green, Mitchell rolled forward into the crosswalk. Moments later he is hit by a police vehicle and thrown from his motorized wheelchair. On top of the police not offering apologies, they have given him a traffic citation.
